In 2006, a few women came together with an idea. An idea to create a local charity comprised of Chaldean American women. Since its inception, the Ladies of Hope have been able to implement valued community programs such as: · Translation services for parents when dealing with the school registration process, assistance in classrooms for children learning to speak the English language, and assistance to school employees in facilitating conversations regarding a student with the parent. · We also developed a backpack program for children in need through the Cajon Valley School District. This program enables the school district to identify any children whose parents cannot afford to purchase backpacks and school supplies for the children and provide them these essentials. · We also provided training for our members who wished to become Promotora’s. As a Promotora the member / volunteer learned skills on how to create a bridge between the schools and refugees, be advocates for social change, increase awareness, and remove cultural and language barriers. · As we became more aware of the struggles our community faced, especially in these economic times, we developed a rental assistance program for those in need where we provided monetary support. · As the needs in the community changed, we also provided furniture and mattresses to help families establish their residences, provided household items, and gave out gift cards for food and medication. As a group, we have also sponsored community lectures such as drug awareness and hosted a women’s health fair to increase awareness, provided volunteers to local groups such as the Knights of Columbus when they sponsor activities in the community, and scholarships for young women pursuing their education. Our goal is to provide the community we live in with avenues to help those in need in addition to providing our members opportunities to give back to the community. |
